Ten years have passed since the apparent end of the Miss Marple murders, when Agatha Christie’s friends’ maid, shares concerns for her cousin’s safety at a remote mental institution.

Agatha agrees to help, and takes along her other old friend, Mary Westmacott, to visit the Gateshead Institute.

At the asylum, disturbing questions pervade: Are one of the patients having an improper relationship with married wealthy proprietor, Doctor Archibald? What are the strange scraping sounds, that only Mary can hear in the dead of night? And what dark secret lies behind the hidden grave in the nearby woods?
