Mary Westmacott is invited to stay at Gossington Hall to see an old schoolfriend, Martha Saunders. Mary invites Agatha Christie along to join her, as a Hall of the same name strangely features in several of her books.

At the residence, Martha holds a fateful garden party, and invites more figures from her turbulent life.

Martha was once a Hollywood star, but now she is increasingly reclusive and focussed on tragic elements of her past – elements that could ultimately lead to… murder.
